Unconventional Fanworks Exchange is a gift exchange for fanwork besides traditional fic and art, including (but not limited to): meta, in-universe documents, vids, podfic, audio not!fic, chatfic, and multimedia fanwork.

There are some significant changes to this round of Unconventional Fanworks. First and foremost, this year's round will run on Dreamwidth only. This means you do not need an AO3 account to participate, but you do need a Dreamwidth account. All portions of the exchange will be run through Dreamwidth.

Mod Contact: via Dreamwidth private messages, or flowersforgravesfics (at) gmail (dot) com. You may also comment on this post. Comments are not screened.

Schedule:
Nominations: April 21 - April 28
Signups: April 29 - May 6
Assignments out: No later than May 10
Works due: June 14
Works revealed: June 21

Nominations
Nominations will be done via comments on a Dreamwidth post. You may nominate a maximum of 5 medium types, and a maximum of 5 fandoms. There is no limit to the number of characters you may nominate within each fandom, but please be reasonable. This year, you may not nominate relationships. Preferred relationships may be indicated within the details section of the signup.

Please nominate each character under a name that will be recognizable to people familiar with the fandom. Original Work nominations, worldbuilding nominations, and nominations of "Any X Character" (such as "Any Sith Character") are accepted, but please do not nominate Creator's Choice of Fandom or characters within that fandom. RPF nominations must be of persons 18+ and famous in their own right. Any nomination in bad taste -- such as RPF nominations of people famous primarily for their participation in crimes against humanity or serial killers alive after 1900 -- will be rejected at my sole discretion.

The list of nominated fandoms, characters, and media will be under cuts on the nominations post.

Signups
Signups will be done via comments on two separate Dreamwidth posts: one for requests, one for offers. Each participant must comment on both posts in order to be considered signed up.

Requests must include 2-10 fandoms and 3-10 medium types per fandom. Offers must include 2+ fandoms and 3+ medium types. There is no limit to the number of characters you may request or offer under each fandom, but please be reasonable knowing that this event is hand-matched. You may request "Any Nominated Character" or "Any Nominated Medium," but you may not DNW anything you have requested.

Assignments
OR matching will be done based on fandom, character, and medium. You are guaranteed to match only on one fandom, one character, and one medium in the same request.

You will be required to produce a fanwork based on your recipient's requests that includes one fandom, one character, and one medium from the same request. This does not need to be the same one you matched on! If the medium you matched on provides a general guideline (such as certain poetry forms), that will be the minimum requirement. If the medium you matched on does not provide a general guideline, please see the glossary [forthcoming]. Broadly, these will be the same or similar to previous years.

Assignments will be sent by replying to your offer comment with the name and link to your recipient's request comment.

Posting
To post, you must join the comm. Subscribing is not sufficient!

All entries are required to be approved by an administrator (me) before they go live; this is how I will hold works until reveals.

Other Guidelines
- All participants must be 18+.

- While there is no anon period, please refrain from discussing your work publicly before reveals.

- Bad-faith participation will not be tolerated, and abusing or manipulating the rules may also result in a permanent ban.

- If you are banned from my journal, you may not participate in this event.

- You may not DNW anything you request. This includes DNWing a specific type of fanwork when requesting "Any Nominated Medium" or a specific character when requesting "Any Nominated Character" or "Any X Character."

- If you are requesting a transformative medium (i.e., any medium that involves manipulating another fanwork, such as podfic, recursive fic, or translation), you must indicate in your signup if you are okay with your own work being used to fill your own prompt. There will also be an opt-in post where participants without a transformative fanwork policy can indicate on this comm whether they are willing to have their work transformed for this event only.

- If you need to contact me to request to not match with someone, please do the following:
a) make sure you tailor your signup to avoid matching to them as much as possible on your own,
b) indicate whether you want to not be matched as their creator, their recipient, or both,
c) tell me what to do if they want to pick up your pinch hit or if they write you a treat, and
d) do not tell me why you don't want to match with them.

- Treats are welcome, and do not have to fit the length minimums. Unless otherwise indicated, please do not treat in a medium the recipient did not request.

- Please do not post your completed work to AO3 until after works are revealed on Dreamwidth.

Hi! Is there any particular reason this isn't running on AO3 this year?

That's understandable I get it completely! :D I did notice you cited health issues as part of the reason for skipping last year, so I sincerely hope this round is easier on you! <3

I had a question about one of the nominated mediums! I saw that fanvids were nominated, but my definition of a fanvid is different than the one used in the 2023 medium definitions. (I regularly edit videos, and what I would call a fanvid is what you defined as a Fan Made Music Video or songvid, unless I misunderstood and "existing" means "from the source material.") Would videos of that type (i.e., using canon footage and set to music) fall under fanvids for this tagset, or would I need to also nominate Fan Made Music Video? Just want to make sure before I decide on my noms. Sorry if I'm overthinking things!

Thank you! I am excited you're running UFex this year; I had fun last round!

Yeah, I think as long as it's made clear what's meant by what, people can request/offer what they're comfortable with/interested in! It might be useful to describe fanvids as an umbrella term or category as well as a medium? But I'll definitely nom Fan Made Music Video separately since music is an intrinsic part of the kind of fanvid I'm into. Thank you!

Is there room to post anonymously? Since things have to be posted directly on the dreamwidth that seems unlikely/impossible.
